Liposuction Surgery Candidates
The success of a liposuction procedure depends on the skin contracting down after the fat has been sucked out. Therefore, if you are very overweight or your skin is very loose and flabby in the areas you want to be treated, then liposuction may not be right for you. Dr. Aronowitz will perform an assessment to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.
Liposuction Procedure
The procedure will begin with a small incision. This will be done under general anesthesia. A rigid metal tube with hole(s) at the end will then be passed through the fat layer. The tube (called a cannula) will be connected to a suction pump, and the fat will be sucked out. The cannula is passed through the area several times from different directions, resulting in a ”Swiss cheese” effect on the fat layer.
Treatment Outcome
After the surgery, you must wear a girdle or pressure garment, and the holes in the fat layer will be pressed flat and healed. The healing process will take about six weeks. The suctioned fat can be re-injected in other areas to correct face or body contour problems.
If this fat fails to survive as living tissue, it may be gradually re-absorbed over the next 3-12 months or converted into lumps of scar tissue. Your skin may feel numb for 2-3 months. Strenuous activity should be avoided for at least four weeks after the procedure, and typically you will need 3-10 days off work.
