What Causes Ruptured and Calcified Implants?

Implant ruptures can be caused by many factors, including trauma to the breast, surgical error, cracks that develop over time, and pressure during mammogram procedures. This applies to both saline and silicone implants.

Calcification can occur due to benign changes in the breast, such as a fibroadenoma or the formation of breast cysts. They can also form if you’ve had an infection in your breast tissue.

Treatments for Ruptured and Calcified Implants

Implant replacement surgery is necessary if you have ruptured or calcified implants. This procedure is done under general anesthesia. During the operation, Dr. Aronowitz will make an incision around the perimeter of the areola or under the lower fold of your breasts. He will then remove the damaged implants along with scar tissue and add the new implants. Stitches, tape, or skin adhesives will close the incisions.

What Results Can I Expect?

Proper implant replacement will minimize the complications of having leaked implants in your body. That said, you will require some bedrest after the surgery and should refrain from exercise until your body heals. Dr. Aronowitz will discuss any possible medications as well as the use of compression garments following the procedure during your initial consultation.
