Sagging skin is the most unfortunate and often overlooked side effect of losing weight. Those who have been chronically overweight their entire lives may be surprised by the amount of loose tissue on their arms. Thankfully, a simple brachioplasty or “arm lift” can address this loose tissue. Dr. Aronowitz can perform this procedure in the comfort of our Los Angeles, California office. Brachioplasty Surgery Candidates

You may be a good candidate for a brachioplasty if your weight is relatively stable, but you have significant upper arm skin laxity. To have this surgery, you must also be healthy and not struggle with medical conditions. It is a good idea to avoid smoking if you’re considering this procedure.

Brachioplasty Procedure

A brachioplasty procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia and can take roughly 2-3 hours. This is an outpatient procedure. During the operation, Dr. Aronowitz will remove the excess skin and fat from your upper arm that developed because of substantial weight loss, weight gain, or the effects of aging. The result is a firmer, more youthful look. A brachioplasty is often done with other “lift” procedures, such as breast or body lifts.

Treatment Outcome

You can expect some postoperative discomfort after the procedure. This can typically be managed with oral painkillers and will subside after a few days.

Drainage tubes may be left in for 7-10 days post-op to collect extraneous blood and fluid. Although you may go home after the surgery, adult supervision is recommended for 24 hours following the surgery to monitor recovery.

Swelling will typically subside within the first few weeks, and a compression bandage may be worn to promote proper healing. Strenuous activity should be avoided for four weeks. Scars from the operation will naturally fade within a few months following the procedure.
