Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure used to enhance the appearance of a woman’s breasts. While most women choose to make their breasts larger and fuller, this procedure is also used following mastectomies to rebuild a woman’s bust following the removal of her natural breasts for medical reasons. Two forms of breast implants are available:
Dr. Aronowitz also uses stem cell-enriched fat injections to augment breasts. Women must be at least 18 to undergo breast augmentation utilizing saline-filled implants or injections and at least 22 when using silicone implants.
Patients have breast augmentation for a variety of reasons. Some women are dissatisfied with the size of their breasts. Other women may have asymmetrical breasts and want to make them more even in size and shape. Sometimes after dramatic weight loss, women will want to restore the fullness of their bust. Some women choose to have breast implants and reconstruction following a mastectomy to maintain the appearance of their busts.
In many cases, breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure. The operation is performed under general anesthesia and takes about an hour depending on what type of implant or injection is being used and whether there will be a reconstruction of the surrounding tissues. Depending on the specific treatment, an incision is made under the breasts, under the arms, or around the nipples. When the implants have been placed into a pocket above or below the chest muscles, the surgeon will close the incisions with surgical tape or sutures.
Dr. Aronowitz provides an extensive pre-surgery consultation to determine exactly what the patient wants to achieve and determines the best procedure to provide the desired results. Following surgery, patients will experience some swelling and will need to avoid strenuous activity for a few days. Dr. Aronowitz will provide or prescription for a painkiller to relieve any discomfort. Once the swelling subsides, patients will see an immediate improvement in the appearance of their breasts.
