Facelift Surgery Candidates

Most facelift candidates are adults over the age of 40. This is the age where sagging skin truly begins to become a problem. That said, as long as your health is stable, this procedure can be performed at almost any age, even well into the 70-80s. Following a facelift, you will continue to experience facial aging, but the effects will be far less pronounced. You will continue to look younger than you would if the procedure had not been performed.

Facelift Surgery Procedure

A facelift is typically performed under general anesthesia, but can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation if you prefer. You may be a day patient or require an overnight stay in a post-surgical facility afterward. This procedure can be combined with other procedures such as liposuction of the neck, fat grafting, and more.

Movement of the deeper tissues gives a longer-lasting result, with less tension and pulling on the skin. For most patients a “sub-periosteal” technique may be the best method for a achieving a good result. This technique involves lifting all the soft tissues upwards on the cheekbones and tightening the neck muscles.

Treatment Outcome

Bulky dressing must be worn on your head and neck for 24-48 hours after your surgery. You can expect some bruising of the face and neck for about 2-3 weeks afterward. Temporary weakness of facial movements is common during this period.

In most cases, facial swelling will settle within the first 5-7 days. Your facial skin will remain numb for about three months as the tiny branches of the sensory nerves in the skin are cut when the skin is undermined. A facelift can be repeated after 5-10 years if needed.

Facelift Surgery Los Angeles FAQ

A facelift is a cosmetic surgical procedure where the doctor surgically lifts and tightens the saggy tissue areas on the face and neck. The purpose is to reduce the signs of aging, such as deep wrinkles, excess skin, and fat around the neck and jawline. People elect to receive a facelift to help restore their youthful appearance. The results ultimately differ for each patient based on their current age and condition.

Most patients experience bruising and swelling after the surgery, but these symptoms will only last about 1 to 3 weeks. The typical patient will feel comfortable enough to go outside around other people after 1 to 2 weeks. However, the full results of the surgery will come around 3 to 4 months after the surgery. That means you shouldn’t plan any big social events until you’ve given yourself plenty of time to recover.

Facelifts do a lot to enhance your youthful appearance, but they cannot stop the aging process. The enhanced appearance should last for at least 10 years before you will need work done again. Of course, the longevity of the facelift depends on several different factors, such as your weight, smoking, genetics, lifestyle, and so on. Talk with your doctor to learn more about these factors, as they are different for everybody.

You have probably seen some celebrities showcase some less-than-flattering facelifts that look as if their faces are pulled up. Fortunately, this won’t be the result for everybody who gets a facelift. The best way to avoid the pull-up look is to choose an experienced and licensed surgeon who has a long track record of delivering positive results for their patients. A good surgeon can minimize the pulled-up look for you.

There are some things you can do to significantly reduce and minimize the bruising, numbness, pain, and swelling after surgery. While there is no way to avoid these symptoms completely, you can take steps to avoid them to the fullest extent possible. First, avoid taking any supplements or medications because they can increase the risk of blood clotting during the first few weeks of recovery. Your doctor will give you special vitamins to take around the time of the surgery. Don’t take any other vitamins or supplements not prescribed by your doctor. The next thing you should do is avoid strenuous activities within the allotted timeframe set by your doctor. Move slowly and take it easy as you give your face time to recover fully. If you notice the symptoms are still worsening, see your doctor right away to address the issue.

The surgeon will try to make the incisions in the most discreet areas of your face possible to minimize scarring. Most patients will have a visible crease around the front of their ear, but it doesn’t usually affect their appearance too much. Every patient will ultimately have different levels of visible scarring based on the specific facelift surgery they received. In most cases, all visible scarring will fade away within 6 to 12 months.
