A lumpectomy is a common procedure performed to remove cancerous cells from breast tissue. This can result in a loss of 50 to 75% of tissue and asymmetrical shaping. Mastectomies are also common when treating breast cancer and many women are unhappy with how their breasts look after this operation. Breast reconstruction is often used by Dr. Aronowitz to help women rebuild their bodies and confidence after cancer by replacing or re-contouring the breasts after a lumpectomy or mastectomy. Dr. Aronowitz also uses stem cell enriched fat injections during the procedure to stimulate natural regrowth of fat tissues within the breast further repairing the damage. The stem cells are also harvested from the patient's own body, avoiding these use of foreign substances.
Breast reconstruction is performed under general anesthesia and is usually an outpatient procedure. During the operation, the doctor marks the areas where the injections and incisions are made. If needed, Dr. Aronowitz will use silicon or saline implants to replace the breast tissue removed with the cancer. When reconstructing the breasts, the stem cell-enriched fat adds volume, lost from the removal of the malignant tissues, and facilitates the growth of blood vessels and additional fat. The fat is obtained through liposuction of another spot on the body, such as the thighs, hips, or buttocks. The cells are separated and cleaned in an innovative machine and then injected into the breasts. Stem cells can aid in healing skin cells which have been damaged from radiation treatments as well.
Dr. Aronowitz is a gifted surgeon and will reconstruct a patient’s breasts to meet or surpass their expectations. Most patients experience some swelling following the surgery and will need to wear a surgical bra when the dressings are removed. Patients should avoid strenuous activity for a few days and may also need to avoid heavy lifting for a while. Over-the-counter pain relievers can minimize the discomfort. Pain medications can also be prescribed by Dr. Aronowitz. After the patient recovers, their breasts should appear as they did before any cancer treatments or better.
